COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County residents may see a strong northern lights display starting tonight, if weather permits, with visibility potentially extending across up to 20 U.S. states, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The aurora is expected to be visible late tonight into early Friday morning and possibly again on Friday night. A moderate G3 geomagnetic storm, caused by solar eruptions, is predicted by NOAA to produce a Kp index of 7, allowing the lights to be seen further south than typical including all of southern Michigan, with a view line reaching into northern Indiana and Ohio.
For best viewing, look north between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., though they can appear at any time when the sky is dark enough.
