ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – A residential fire early Monday morning in Angola caused an estimated $280,000 in damages and sent two people to the hospital for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation.
The Angola Fire Department was dispatched at 3:40 a.m. to the residence at 615 S West Street, upon the arrival of Angola Police officers, the home was being evacuated and a working fire was reported.
Angola Fire Chief Bill Harter says Angola fire crews arrived six minutes later to find flames visible and the attached garage heavily involved.
Mutual aid was immediately requested from several area departments to help combat the blaze.
Harter says, during a primary search of the residence, firefighters located the family’s dogs and safely removed them without harm.
The homeowner, David McCue, and his son were transported to Cameron Hospital by Steuben County EMS to be treated burns and smoke inhalation.
Their current condition is not known.
The fire was brought under control by 4:51 a.m., and all units cleared the scene by 6:37 a.m.
The home was on of many in the area without power at the time of the fire due to weather related outages that had occurred following the heavy wet snow Sunday morning.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Total damages are estimated at $280,000, which includes $150,000 in structural damage, $75,000–$100,000 in contents, and $30,000 for additional losses including a jet ski and a side-by-side vehicle.
Assisting agencies at the scene included the Ashley, Fremont, Hamilton, Metz, Orland, and Steuben Township Fire Departments; Angola Police Department; Steuben County Sheriff’s Department; Steuben County EMS; NIPSCO; and the American Red Cross.
