CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputies successfully stopped a vehicle traveling the wrong way on I-69 early Wednesday morning after a multi-county pursuit involving stop sticks.
At approximately 2:00 a.m., authorities began receiving multiple reports of a northbound vehicle in the southbound lanes of I-69 near I-94.
Deputies quickly located the vehicle near mile marker 40 and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver failed to yield. Stop sticks were deployed three separate times, successfully deflating all the vehicle’s tires. The vehicle, with its speed significantly reduced, was eventually boxed in and safely stopped near mile marker 53 in neighboring Eaton County.
Upon making contact with the driver, a 76-year-old individual, deputies discovered the driver was not intentionally evading them but was experiencing a medical emergency and was disoriented.
The driver was immediately transported to Sparrow Hospital for medical treatment.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from the Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority, the Michigan State Police, and the Charlotte Police Department during the incident.
The case is still under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact Lieutenant Benjamin Hess or provide an anonymous tip through Silent Observer.
