COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Eight cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) have been reported in Michigan poultry flocks this November across Ottawa, Allegan, Monroe, and St. Clair counties.
The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency is advising local poultry owners to implement biosecurity measures, such as removing bird feeders and baths, to prevent transmission from wild birds.
Recommended actions include preventing contact between domestic and wild birds, maintaining hygiene when handling birds and moving between coops, disinfecting equipment, and securing feed and water sources.
Signs of HPAI include sudden deaths, decreased egg production or water consumption, diarrhea, sneezing, and coughing.
Suspected cases in domestic birds should be reported to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, while unusual wild bird deaths should be reported to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
