JONESVILLE, MI (WTVB) – More details are emerging on the heroic efforts of a Jonesville police officer on Wednesday night.
A two-story home in Jonesville was destroyed by fire Wednesday night. The Jonesville Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 228 West Chicago Street at 6:33 p.m.
Jonesville Police Sergeant David Martin was the first to arrive and observed heavy smoke and flames.
Two residents had already evacuated safely and informed Sergeant Martin that a third male resident was trapped inside due to injuries sustained from a recent fall.
Martin entered the burning structure and successfully assisted the injured man to safety.
Fire departments from Litchfield and Hillsdale City were called for mutual aid. Firefighters quickly gained control of the blaze, bringing it under control shortly after 7:00 p.m.
While all human occupants escaped without serious injury, a family dog tragically perished in the blaze after being trapped on the second floor.
Crews remained on site for approximately three hours, clearing the scene just after 10:30 p.m.
The State Fire Marshalls office was scheduled to arrive on the scene today to assist in determining how the fire started.
