MORENCI, MI (WTVB) – The father accused of killing his three young sons fifteen years after their disappearance is back in Lenawee County to face a new slate of charges.
53-year-old John Skelton faces charges including “homicide open murder” and tampering with evidence related to the deaths of his sons Alexander, Andrew, and Tanner.
The boys were last seen in Morenci in November 2010. Skelton was transferred to the Lenawee County Jail on Monday, and during his first court appearance, a judge set his bond at $60 million dollars, according to information provided by Michigan State Police.
Skelton was transferred from the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility, where he was serving the final weeks of a 15-year sentence on separate charges connected to his sons’ disappearance. He had previously been convicted of unlawful imprisonment and was originally slated for release on Nov. 29, 2025.
The new proceedings would indicate a major development in a case that has spanned nearly a decade and a half, allowing authorities to pursue more serious charges following the conclusion of his prior sentence.
The case has long been hampered by the absence of physical evidence of the boys’ fate. Investigators have never found their remains, leading to legal challenges. Earlier this year, a judge granted a request to officially declare the three brothers legally dead.
The new court filings emphasize that investigators maintain there is no evidence suggesting the boys could still be alive, underscoring the shift in the legal approach to the tragic disappearance.
