GILEAD TOWNSHIP, MI – The Gilead Township Board of Trustees has firmly rejected a proposal by Pure Sun Grown, LLC
to establish a commercial marijuana grow operation within the township’s borders, despite the promise of a financial boost. The decision, made in a 4-1 vote this week, underscores the township’s continued stance against commercial cannabis operations.
The vote was specifically on whether to consider the proposal or the required ordinance amendment that would be necessary to allow such a business. The board’s rejection effectively stops the project in it’s tracks before it could advance to the planning stages.
The decision aligns with a sentiment prevalent in many communities along the Michigan-Indiana border, where residents have frequently voted to prohibit commercial marijuana businesses.
Many residents have expressed concerns about changing the character of their rural townships.
While Michigan broadly legalized recreational and medical marijuana, state law does allow individual municipalities to “opt-out” and prohibit cannabis businesses within their jurisdictions.
Gilead Township has firmly exercised that right, and the board has previously indicated a desire to keep the township free from commercial marijuana facilities.
