MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – Despite the bitterly cold temperatures and the cancellation of classes Friday, a large crowd packed the Marshall High School gymnasium as the Redhawks welcomed the Coldwater Cardinals.
In the opener, the Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead, took a 27-16 advantage to the halftime break, and played even with the Redhawks in the second half to notch a 54-43 victory.
Mya Porter led all scorers with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 6 steals, and 4 blocks, while Rylie VanAken had 12 points and 3 steals. Coley Burkhardt added 11 points, 8 boards, and 5 steals.
Coldwater improved to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in the Interstate 8, a game back of league-leading Parma Western. The Cardinals will visit the Panthers on Tuesday.
Jordyn St. John led Marshall with 14 points, while Ally Koenig added 11. The Redhawks fell to 8-4 overall, 4-3 in the Interstate 8, and will visit Pennfield on Tuesday.

The nightcap was close throughout the first half. Marshall led 12-8 after one, but Coldwater had a 12-11 edge in the second quarter to trim the halftime deficit to 23-20. The Redhawks outscored the Cardinals 35-22 the rest of the way to bring home a 58-42 win.
Gavin Taylor led Coldwater with 14 points, including a 7-of-8 performance from the free throw line, while Julian Thompson had 9. Owen Tappenden had a team-high 5 rebounds.
The Cardinals fell to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the Interstate 8. They will host Portage Central on Tuesday.
Lincoln Fuller led all scorers with 14 points and 7 rebounds for Marshall. Clark Erwin added 13 points and 4 boards, while Matthew Waito and Lee Hall each scored 12. The Redhawks improved to 10-3 overall, 5-2 in the Interstate 8, and will host league-leading Pennfield Tuesday night.
