LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee has approved the Michigan Democratic Party’s case to hold an early presidential primary in 2028.
They reviewed bids from 12 states this weekend in Puerto Rico for holding a primary before Super Tuesday.
Michigan Democratic Party chairman Curtis Hertel said the state having an early primary would give candidates a meaningful test with voters in the election. Hertel said “it’s crucial that our new national calendar for selecting the next President includes Michigan in an early position.”
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks and House Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri also endorsed the bid, emphasizing Michigan’s demographic diversity and political significance.
The states 2028 primary is scheduled for February 22, 2028, a date that falls within the early window.
