LANSING, MI (WTVB) – State Rep. Jennifer Wortz (R-QUINCY) – championed the House passage of House Bill 4445, which would lift the 2019 ban on deer baiting and feeding in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.
The bill seeks to address concerns about a growing deer population, estimated at roughly 2 million statewide, and reduce related issues such as deer-vehicle collisions and agricultural damage.
Wortz contends that the current ban, imposed by the Michigan Natural Resources Commission, has not prevented the spread of diseases like chronic wasting disease and bovine tuberculosis, arguing that deer naturally congregate.
By restoring baiting as a management tool, the legislation aims to encourage hunting and improve harvest success. The bill has now moved to the Senate for further consideration
