STEVENSVILLE, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater improved to 7-0 on the season as they went 3-0 Saturday at a round robin tournament hosted by Stevensville Lakeshore. The Cardinals defeated the host Lancers 2-1, shut out New Prairie (IN) 9-0, and beat Edwardsburg 7-2.
Coldwater’s game against Lakeshore was scoreless until the Lancers’ Payton Sterling hit a solo homer to left in the sixth. The Cardinals responded with a Rylie VanAken round-tripper to center in their half of the inning. Mackenzie Searing’s walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the seventh brought home Laynie VanAken, who led off the frame with a double. Laynie VanAken was also the winning pitcher, allowing 4 hits with no walks and 13 strikeouts.
Against New Prairie, Audrina Bucklin threw a complete game shutout, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. Vandria Bucklin hit a solo homer and went 2-for-3 in the game with 2 RBIs. Rylie VanAken also went 2-for-3, while her sister Laynie was 2-for-4 and drove in 2 runs.
The Cardinals scored 5 runs in the first inning against Edwardsburg and never let up, collecting 10 hits on the game. Addyson Bucklin and Mackenzie Searing each doubled, drove in 2 runs, and went 2-for-3. Searing was also the winning pitcher, striking out 4 and allowing 1 walk in 4 innings of work.
Coldwater will travel to Parma Western Tuesday.
THREE RIVERS, MI – Bronson went 2-1 Saturday at the Merry Jo Tavernier Memorial Invitational at Three Rivers. The Vikings lost to Portage Central 6-1, but bounced back to beat Pennfield 14-0 and Allen Park 6-4.
Bronson will take a 5-1 record to their doubleheader Tuesday against Union City.
MARSHALL, MI – Quincy went 0-2 at the Marshall Sports Fest Saturday, losing to Mason 12-2 and to Bath 11-5.
The Orioles could only muster three singles against Mason pitching; they came from Gabby Norris, Shaylee Cope, and Taylor Lewis.
Norris, Cops, and Lewis also had the only hits against Bath. Norris and Hannah Brown had the RBIs for the Lady O’s.
Quincy fell to 4-2 overall and will host Stockbridge Tuesday.
UNION CITY, MI – Union City improved to 6-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Galesburg-Augusta, 15-0 in 3 innings and 9-4.
Brooke Thomas threw a three-inning no-hitter with 4 walks and 8 strikeouts in the opener. Hannah Schofield was 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs, Temperance Sours drove in 4 runs while going 2-for-3, Madison Krummrey had 2 doubles, and Ellie William added an RBI double as the Chargers collected 14 hits.
Karlie Eagen was the winning pitcher in the nightcap, waling 1 and striking out 10. Ambrielle Phelps was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs; Williams, Jezelle Nagel, and Laren Tundevold each doubled; and Schofield and Krummrey tripled as UC pounded out 15 hits.
