COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for Branch County and much of southwest Michigan as a late-season cold snap threatens the Great Lakes region.
The watch is set to take effect from 2 a.m. Saturday through 9 a.m. Saturday morning, with forecasters warning that temperatures could dip into the upper 20s to low 30s.
This cold front follows a stretch of mild weather that has already prompted early blooming, making local vegetation particularly vulnerable to frost damage.
Residents are urged to take immediate precautions to protect tender plants, sensitive crops, and outdoor plumbing from the sub-freezing conditions.
Agricultural experts note that fruit trees and freshly planted annuals are at high risk if left uncovered during the overnight hours.
While temperatures are expected to moderate slightly by Sunday, the National Weather Service advises monitoring local updates as additional frost advisories may be issued for the remainder of the weekend.
