COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – With Memorial Day just over a week away, and despite the high fuel p AAA projects a near-record travel surge for Michigan residents heading into the holiday weekend. According to the latest forecast, more than 1.3 million Michiganders will travel at least 50 miles from home, marking the second-highest travel volume ever recorded for the state.
While air travel is projected to dip slightly by 1.7%, road trips are expected to increase, with about 1.2 million residents planning to hit the highways. This local trend mirrors a massive national outlook, as AAA estimates a record 45 million Americans will be on the move between May 21 and May 25.
Michigan drivers should prepare for both crowded roads and higher costs, as pump prices are currently at their highest levels since 2022. To avoid the worst traffic, experts from the Auto Club Group suggest avoiding the roads during peak congestion times, which are expected on Thursday, May 21, and Friday, May 22, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m..
For those looking for a smoother journey, Sunday, May 24, is projected to be the lightest travel day of the long weekend.
Despite the financial pressure of fuel costs, Michigan tourism remains a priority for many, with travelers likely to favor domestic destinations like beach towns and state parks.
