LAGRANGE COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – The body of a 16-year-old boy was recovered from Witmer Lake in LaGrange County on Sunday evening following an intensive search and rescue operation.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene at 5:01 p.m. after reports that a teenager had jumped from a boat without a life jacket on the southeast side of the lake and failed to resurface. The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department immediately instructed boaters to clear the water to assist first responders.
Despite the rapid joint response from local fire crews, the Indiana State Police, and DNR Law Enforcement, the operation shifted into a recovery mission by 7:30 p.m.
The LaGrange County Coroner’s Office has taken over the investigation into what is currently being treated as an apparent drowning.
Officials have withheld the identity of the victim pending notification of the family. While initial reports detail the accidental nature of the jump near Wolcottville, an autopsy and subsequent toxicology analysis will formally establish the final cause and manner of death.
