COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Health officials in Michigan are urging residents to avoid bagged lettuce to avoid being sickened with cyclosporiasis.
The state’s chief medical executive, Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, says Michigan is considered the epicenter of the outbreak, with now more than 3,700 cases.
The parasite causes explosive diarrhea and other severe symptoms. More than five thousand cases of the infection have been reported across the country.

The CDC and the FDA say they are investigating several outbreaks linked to fresh produce. Michigan officials are still investigating the cause of the outbreak but in the meantime are urging residents to avoid salad mixes and packaged lettuce.
According to the latest numbers released today from the Department of Health and Human Services Branch County cases remained unchanged from the four reported Tuesday.
