COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Municipalities across Michigan are aggressively tightening zoning ordinances and implementing development pauses to assert local control over the rapid expansion of resource-intensive AI data centers.
Driven by growing public concern over massive electrical grid strain, heavy water consumption, and excessive operational noise, more than 50 Michigan communities have recently enacted temporary moratoriums to buy time to rewrite their regulatory frameworks.
Because state law under the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act prohibits local governments from issuing outright bans on data centers, cities and townships are shifting their strategies toward passing highly restrictive ordinances that tightly dictate where these facilities can operate and limit their resource flexibility.
City Manager Keith Baker says to stay in step with this statewide push for regulatory readiness, the City of Coldwater has scheduled a Joint Planning Commission and City Council Special Meeting.
