CENTERVILLE, MI (WTVB) – The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office has issued an warning regarding a spike in phone scams targeting residents, with fraudsters impersonating law enforcement to demand immediate payments for fake warrants or bail.
These scammers often use “spoofed” numbers and unconventional payment methods, such as gift cards or cryptocurrency, to pressure victims.
Sheriff Chad L. Spence emphasized that no legitimate law enforcement or court official will ever demand immediate, non-traditional payments over the phone. Residents are advised to hang up immediately, protect personal information, and share this alert with vulnerable individuals.
