HILLSDALE, MI (WTVB) – Hillsdale County Sheriff Scott Hodshire faces two felony charges for misconduct in office and obstruction of justice following a Michigan State Police investigation. The charges were authorized on August 19, 2026, and Hodshire was subsequently booked and released on Monday, on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond, with the case handled directly by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office to avoid local conflicts of interest.
According to newly released court warrants, the allegations stem from activities in Camden, between February 18, 2026, and March 5, 2026, where Hodshire allegedly abused his official power by leaking confidential details of an ongoing criminal investigation to the target or the suspect’s family.
Officials have not yet publicly disclosed the specific case or the identity of the individual allegedly tipped off by the sheriff. By allegedly doing so, he committed misconduct in office, according to the warrant.
Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
The state court administrator Office has assigned the case to Jackson County District Judge Daniel Goostrey after the Hillsdale County Judge disqualified herself from the case.
Hodshire who has not issued a comment on the charges will make his initial court appearance Wednesday morning. So far neither the Attorney Generals Office nor the Michigan State Police have publicly commented on the case.
