UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers improved to 4-0 on Friday night as they defeated a Branch County rival for a second straight week.
The Chargers knocked off the Quincy Orioles 22-18 in a Big Eight Conference game at Alumni Field that had Charger fans holding their breath during a wild and crazy finish which saw the Orioles offense get to within three yards of a winning score.
Both teams scored three touchdowns but the difference in the final score came as the result of two point conversions. The Chargers were two-out-of-three while the Orioles were unsuccessful on their three attempts.
Union City led 14-12 at halftime. They added to their lead on the opening possession of the second half when Trey McDonald scored his second touchdown of the night from three yards out. Braxton Miller’s two point conversion put the Chargers ahead 22-12 with 7:51 left in the third quarter.
Quincy got it back to a one score contest when Joe Gray threw a 28 yard touchdown pass to Noah Rufenacht with 7:58 left in the game.
The Orioles marched from their own 25 down to the Chargers three yard line in the final two minutes and had a pair of cracks to pull out the victory. But a pair of passes went incomplete as the Orioles ran out of time and saw their record drop to 3-1.
McDonald wound up unofficially with 175 yards on 25 carries. Miller added 70 yards on seven carries as Union City compiled 325 yards of total offense, all of it on the ground. Quincy’s offense finished with 288 yards.
Quincy’s Noah Kelley finished with 161 yards on 20 carries which included a 85 yard touchdown scamper. Gray passed for 95 yards while Rufenacht had four catches for 39 yards.
JJ Wright had a 46 yard interception return for a Quincy touchdown while Drake Laird rounded out the Union City scoring with a five yard TD.
The Chargers host Stockbridge next Friday night while the Orioles play at Homer.
