BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A 36-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning following a chaotic series of events that included an attempted break-in, the theft of a police cruiser, and a tense standoff in Battle Creek.
Officers responding to a reported breaking and entering on Capital Avenue SW around 3:00 a.m. on Monday encountered the hammer-wielding suspect, who became hostile and claimed officers would have to shoot him.
After ineffective attempts to deploy less-lethal force, the suspect stole an unoccupied patrol vehicle, sparking a pursuit that ended when police disabled the cruiser near Meachem Avenue and Kedzie Court.
Following a brief standoff, negotiators convinced the suspect to drop the hammer and surrender.
The suspect was treated for minor injuries before being lodged at the Calhoun County Jail on numerous charges—including vehicle theft, resisting arrest, and aggravated assault of an officer, while one officer was also treated and released following a related police vehicle crash.
