LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Representative Jennifer Wortz (R-Quincy) has introduced a legislative resolution formally calling on Governor Gretchen Whitmer to match federal executive action and provide immediate relief on diesel fuel taxes for the state’s agricultural and forestry sectors.
The legislative push aligns with recent executive orders issued by the President to ease energy burdens during peak harvesting season, mirroring a concurrent request made by the Michigan Farm Bureau. Proponents argue that high diesel costs, which have continually hit record levels across the state, are severely squeezing thin profit margins for local farmers and driving up everyday costs for consumers.
The resolution advocates for a temporary 30-day pause on fuel taxes, a strategic measure intended to alleviate heavy trucking and shipping expenses while fall harvest and road construction projects remain in full swing.
Representative Wortz, whose legislative actions are tracked on her Official House Profile, emphasized that lowering energy and fuel expenses is essential to prevent rising logistics costs from being passed onto families at the grocery store.
While Governor Whitmer has previously used energy emergency declarations to temporarily ease gasoline vapor regulations, this resolution pressures the administration to implement direct tax relief to safeguard Michigan’s rural economy.
