UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Five new members of the Union City High School Athletic Hall of Fame were inducted Friday night in between games of the girls/boys basketball doubleheader at McNett Fieldhouse.
The new inductees are:
1983 graduate Julie Heator, who played basketball and volleyball for the Chargers. She set the school record for most career points during her senior season.
1972 graduate Duane Watkins, who earned nine varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. He was an all-state football player in 1971 and later became a coach at Union City.
1987 graduate Thomas Harty, who earned varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. He an all-state wide receiver in his junior year for the Chargers. Harty later played football at Albion College where he led them in catches and receiving yards.
1958 graduate James T. Grohalski, who earned 13 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball and track. He scored 13 touchdowns and 78 points during his senior season in football. He also earned six Little C Conference track medals.
Charles Wheeler, who coached football, basketball, track, baseball and cross country at Union City High School between 1946 and 1963. He coached the football and basketball teams to undefeated records during the 1948-49 school year.
