UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – In high school boys basketball, Union City led wire-to-wire in their 54-37 victory over cross-county rival Quincy at the McNett Fieldhouse. Elijah Harris led all scorers with 20 points and 6 rebounds for the Chargers. Elijah Way had 14 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals, and Seth Bruce added 11 as Union City improves to 15-4 overall, 11-2 in the Big 8. They will finish runner-up to Concord in the league standings as the Yellow Jackets defeated Springport 73-43 to improve to a perfect 13-0 in the Big 8, 2 games ahead of the Chargers.
The two teams will meet in a makeup game Saturdayin Union City. Quincy was led by Quinn Eifrid with 11 points and Brandon Gary with 10.
In the JV action, Quincy beat Union City 59-44. Isaiah Hart had 15 points, while Brenden Stuchell and Ashton Duk e each had 11 for the Chargers.
The 43rd Annual Al Clyne Exchange Club Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament continued last night at Legg Middle School. Lumen Christi defeated Hillsdale 60-40 in a consolation bracket game, while in the championship bracket, Jackson High was a 70-37 winner against Loy Norrix. Tonight at 7, Coldwater faces Marshall in the championship bracket. Sturgis will take on Schoolcraft in the consolation bracket opener at 5:30.
The MHSAA Individual Wrestling Finals began its three-day run at The Palace of Auburn Hills with 2 Bronson wrestlers winning their first-round matches, David Erwin and Nathan Caudill. They move on to this evening’s championship semifinals. Branch County’s other competitors lost their opening round matches. Coldwater’s Jesse Miller and Sam DeMeester, Union City’s Jacob Todd, and Bronson’s Cole Houtz, Chase Gibson, and Joey Losinski will wrestle in the consolation rounds of the double-elimination tournament this morning.
Tonight in girls basketball, two Branch County teams will compete for some hardware and the chance to move on in the MHSAA Tournament. In the Class B District that Coldwater is hosting at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium, the 14-8 Lady Cards will try to win their first district title since 1995 when they take on 14-7 Edwardsburg. In the Class C Quincy District Final, 4-17 Union City will try to upset Big 8 champion Homer, who come in with a 19-3 record. The Chargers were swept by the Trojans twice during the regular season, including a 55-13 setback just last Friday.
Also in boys basketball, Bronson has a makeup game at Colon tonight.
The MHSAA Bowling Finals get underway today with team competition. Coldwater’s boys team will compete at the Division 2 Final at Super Bowl in Canton. Tomorrow in the Singles Finals, Shawn Johnson and Collin Outwater will represent the Cardinals in Division 2 back at Super Bowl, while in Division 4 at Royal Scot in Lansing, Brandon Hyska will represent Bronson.
