COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater High School’s “We the People” team, which is preparing for next month’s competition in the Youth in Government program’s state tournament, had a preliminary practice round last night before both the Coldwater City Council and the Coldwater Board of Education.
The program is designed to foster understanding in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights and the competition has the students testify at a simulated Congressional hearing before a panel of volunteer attorneys, educators and civic leaders. Coldwater High School government and history teacher Brian Stevens has served as the advisor for “We the People” for 15 years during which time CHS has had several state ranked teams.
The state competition is happening January 8 and Stevens told the School Board last night he’s very excited about this year’s team, calling the 6 students an excellent group. The top two teams in the state get a chance to advance to the nationals in Washington, D.C. and Stevens believes the Coldwater team has a good shot at qualifying for the nationals.
Members of this year’s CHS squad are Rebecca Quimby, Josh Riddle, Shaima Abdullah, Sjmayah Algaradi, Ana Scantlen, and Jeff Knaack.
