COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – While high school football is on the mind of many people tonight, there was action Thursday night. In boys high school soccer, Coldwater a winner last night in a varsity only Interstate 8 Conference match on the road with the Cardinals beating Harper Creek 4-1. Mana Ahmed had 3 goals and one assist with the victory improving their overall record to 13-3-1 and they’re tied for first place with Marshall in the I-8 with a 5-0-1 conference mark.
Azam Ahmed scored the other goal for Coldwater, and Fadel Said and Faheem Abdullah each had an assist, as Coldwater outshot Harper Creek 26-6. Balal Nasser made 4 saves in goal. The Cardinals host Charlotte for their final Interstate 8 Conference game Tuesday. Coldwater is ranked #11 in the latest Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association Division 2 poll.
Also in high school soccer Thursday, Quincy beat Hanover Horton 5-1.
Last night in volleyball, Coldwater picked up a pair of wins in a tri-match at Brooklyn Columbia Central with the Lady Cardinals beating Jackson High 2-0 while defeating the host Golden Eagles 2-1. The Jackson victory game scores were 25-21, 25-13 while in the close match with Columbia Central, Coldwater dropped the first game 23-25 and then rallied to win the next two, 25-23,26-24. On the night, Drue Mullin had a team-high 21 digs. Jasmine Wellet led the way in kills with 21 as well as aces with 5. Jamie Wellet paced the team in assists with 36 while Breanna Eddy and Tyler Scheid each had 5 solo blocks. The wins improved Coldwater’s record to 9-13-4 as they head to Battle Creek tomorrow for the Harper Creek Invitational.
The Coldwater JV volleyball team had the night off, but the freshmen played at Columbia Central and like the varsity earned two wins with a 2-1 victory over Jackson High and 2-0 over Columbia Central. Jordan Clemens had 12 kills and 12 aces while Anna Tappenden had 12 assists and 9 digs.
Also in volleyball, Quincy had a 1-1 record in a tri-match at Hanover Horton with a 2-0 win over Leslie before losing 2-0 to the host Comets. On the night, Mackenzie Moore had 15 kills and Ali Silva had 15 assists. Quincy’s overall record is 15-7-1.
THursday in girls golf, Coldwater came in fifth place in the Interstate Eight Conference Championship meet in Battle Creek at the Bedford Valley Golf Course. Coldwater had a team score of 420 while the winning score of 395 was shot by Jackson Lumen Christi and Charlotte with Lumen Christi finishing first on a tiebreaker. Coldwater ended the season in 5th place overall with Lumen Christi winning the League title.
Coldwater was led by Haley Linton with a round of 99 which also earned her I-8 All-Conference recognition as one of the top 8 girls in the league. Molly Smith shot a 105, Jayla Goodwin had a 107, Claire Sheppard carded a 109, Gabriel Boston shot a 116 and Madison Donbrock rounded out the scoring with a 118. Donbrock was named Honorable Mention All-Conference for her performance this year.
Branch County’s first homecoming football game of the 2015 season happens tonight in Coldwater as the undefeated Division 3 ninth-ranked Cardinals take on the Jackson Lumen Christi Titans with Coldwater shooting for their first ever win over the Titans. Coldwater took over sole possession of the lead in the Interstate 8 last week when they improved to 4-0 in the conference with a win at Jackson Northwest while Lumen Christi suffered their first defeat with a league loss at Marshall. The kickoff tonight at Cardinal Field is 7 p.m. with our live coverage on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30 p.m.
Elsewhere tonight, in the Big 8, it’s Quincy at Reading in the annual Victory Bell game while Union City travels to Jonesville. Bronson has a BCS contest at Mendon. And in 8 Man Football, it’s Tekonsha at Waldron.
There were reserve games played last night including the Coldwater junior varsity losing 20-0 at Lumen Christi. In another JV matchup, Quincy was a winner at home over Reading 36-8. The Orioles rushed for 5 touchdowns, including two each for Luke Rufenacht and Brandon Harrison.
There’s one other event on the Friday high school sports schedule besides football and it’s Coldwater boys tennis with the Division 3 fifth-ranked Cardinals playing today in the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament at Jackson Lumen Christi.

In middle school sports yesterday, in volleyball, Coldwater won three matches at home over Harper Creek with victories for the 8th grade A team and the Seventh grade A and B squads. In the 2-0 eighth grade match, Carrigan Carpenter and Olivia Foley had 7 points each with 5 aces and 3 digs for Foley. Bailey Burkhardt had 4 kills while Abby Thatcher had 4 assists. Coldwater won both seventh grade matches 3-0. Abby Herman had 7 aces in the A match while Mia Rzepka had 5 assists and sharing the lead in digs with 6 each were Herman, Madison Beckhusen, Laynee Paarlberg, and Alyssa Bach. In the B match, Alyssa Stevens was the leading scorer with 7 points.
