LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Have you ever seen a drone flying over the State Prison in Coldwater? The ever increasing presence of drones is leading to ever increasing legislation to restrict their use. One of the latest uses of these unmanned aerial vehicles has been over Corrections facilities, and State Senator John Proos of St. Joseph wants to make sure they don’t fly over Michigan prisons. He says drones are being used to drop packages of illegal contraband, whether it be tobacco or marijuana, in some cases, pornography and even heroin has been delivered in this fashion. According to Proos, it’s kind of like today’s smuggling of a box cutter in a birthday cake and he says it’s something we cannot have.
His bills would make it a four year felony for anyone caught operating a drone within a thousand feet of a state lockup in Michigan. The package is now before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
