COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Almost two months after it officially opened, the new Branch County Jail is housing inmates.
The nearly 50 inmates were moved into the new facility on Friday.
It’s the first time since the early 90s that inmates have not been housed in what was once a senior care facility.
The new jail is divided into four areas for the housing of inmates as well for their booking and release. There is also a public area along with the Sheriff’s Office.
It was made possible after a 20-year, 1.25 mill proposal was approved by Branch County voters in August 2018.
The old jail still has such items as documents and supplies. Decisions still have to be made as to which items will be taken into the new facility.
It’s hoped the old jail will be demolished sometime in the next year.
