COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, Coldwater’s boys and girls varsity basketball teams lost to Jackson Lumen Christi and in the boys game in Coldwater that we had on the radio, the Cardinals fell to the visiting Titans 80-61. Lumen Christi pulled away in the fourth quarter, winning the final period 27-13. Coldwater trailed by just a point, 31-30, at the half. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater was Michael Magocs, who had a game-high 18 points. Also in double figures for the Cardinals was Colin Warner with 15 points. The defeat dropped Coldwater’s record to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the Interstate Eight Conference. The Cardinals are back in action Friday night for another I-8 game at Charlotte.
There was a split in last night’s reserve games with Coldwater winning the junior varsity contest, beating Lumen Christi 66-56 with 21 points for Brady Beckhusen and 14 for Zack Murphy. The Titans took the freshman game over the Cardinals 52-47 with 16 points for Joe Severn and 11 for Christian Pine.
In last night’s girls action at Lumen Christi, the Lady Cardinals lost 47-31. Coldwater was down at the half 20-12 and then the Titans put the game away by winning the third quarter 19-5. Kendall Galloway and Megan Hoath had 6 points apiece with the defeat dropping Coldwater’s record to 1-4 in the conference and 3-7 overall. The Lady Cardinals won the JV game at Lumen Christi 52-45 with 13 points apiece for Maddison Marsh and Carly Duke. Jamie Wellet added 12 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals. There was no freshmen Girls game.
Tuesday night in a boys only varsity game, undefeated Quincy was a winner at home 70-25 over Springport. The Orioles led 31-6 after the opening quarter and never looked back. Jake Rider had 21 points, Jake Jodway 18 and Nick Haberl 17. Chase Cook added 11 assists as Quincy improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big Eight.
Yesterday in bowling, Coldwater’s boys and girls varsity squads picked up wins at Marshall. Brady Omo led the boys to victory, rolling a 257 while Buddy Bailey had a 229. In the Girls win, Patricia Neely had a 196 and Cassidy Wolff a 174. The girls j-v team also beat Marshall with a 161 for both Samantha Youse and Shelby Walker. Coldwater dropped the JV boys match with a 217 for Nick Galliers. The varsity boys record is 3-0 while the girls are 2-1.
Tonight in high school sports, there’s wrestling with Coldwater in a quad meet at Marshall. Also, Quincy has a quad at home including Union City and Bronson is at Niles-Brandywine.
In middle school sports, in Girls basketball, Coldwater tipped off its season yesterday by sweeping four games from Harper Creek. In the 8th grade action in Coldwater, the “A” team beat the Beavers 52-47 with 23 points and 7 steals for Malorie Rzepka while Tyler Scheid and Samantha Rodesiler had 10 points each. The Lady Cardinals took the “B” game 30-25 with 20 points for Anna Tappenden. In the seventh grade games at Harper Creek, the Coldwater “A” team defeated the Beavers 41-23 with 11 points apiece for Carlee Crabtree and Olivia Foley. Coldwater won the “B” game 28-18 with 12 points for Emma Moore. And Bronson picked up a win at White Pigeon with a combined 7th and 8th grade squad defeating the Chiefs 39-23 with 21 points and 8 rebounds for Ashton Wronikowski.
