WASHINGTON (WTVB) – It’s being called the biggest civil rights case of the 21st century and its centered in Michigan. The Supreme Court has agreed to settle the question once and for all whether it’s a violation of the U.S. Constitution for states to ban same sex marriage. They will also decide whether states must recognize marriages conducted in other states. For Jane Deboer and Pat Rouse, a Detroit couple who have separately adopted special needs kids and want to be able to adopt them all, it’s a special honor for their case to be in the spotlight. They assume the Justices will rule their way, because they say they are on the “Right side of history”. But opponents say history is on their side, and plan to make the case that nowhere in the passage of the 14thAmendment was gay marriage mentioned. The Justices will hear arguments in April and issue their decision in late June.
