COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In high school baseball, Coldwater dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday evening to Battle Creek Lakeview by scores of 13-8 and 7-5 at Lowe Field. The Cardinals have dropped three straight as their record fell to 25-9.
Lakeview used an eight run third inning to win the opener and then had to hold off a Cardinal rally in the nightcap after they built a 6-0 lead. The McDonalds Players of the Game were Bryce Barringer who had two hits and two runs scored in the first game and Andrew Richar who had a two run double and a diving catch in the second game. Brendan Spangler had five hits in the doubleheader.
The Coldwater J.V. Baseball team split a doubleheader with Lakeview. The Cardinals won the opener 3-2 but lost the nightcap 6-5. First game winning pitcher Alex Everett went the distance. Lucas Santure had three hits in the first game while Brent Smoker had three hits in the nightcap. The Cardinal J.V.’s finished 20-7.
Quincy 7, Bronson 2; Bronson 8, Quincy 3
Hunter Haylett had two hits and three RBI’s for Quincy in the first game as the Orioles scored four in the second and three more runs in the fourth. Quincy winning pitcher Conner Katz went the distance. Brett Sikorski had two hits for Bronson in the opener. He along with Daniel McMichael and Tommy Littlefield had doubles in the nightcap while Thadd Herman drove in two runs. Noah Winans and Josh Clark both had two RBI’s for the Orioles. Tyler Roussey was the winning pitcher in the second game as the Vikings scored five runs in the top of the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie. Bronson is now 25-8.
—GIRLS SOFTBALL—
Lakeview 5, Coldwater 4; Coldwater 11, Lakeview 0
Coldwater split their doubleheader with Battle Creek Lakeview as they dropped the opener 5-4 and won the nightcap 11-0. Darlene Horn, Drue Mullin and Jamie Wellet all had two hits in the first game. Tyler Schied was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. Stacy Guzy and Wellet both had three hits in the win over the Spartans.
The Coldwater J.V. Girls Softball team ended their season by sweeping Battle Creek Lakeview 17-9 and 23-5. Emma Stanley and Cheyenne Akers were the winning pitchers. Carly Duke had three hits in the opener while Seairah Bradley had three RBI’s. Jay Snyder had an inside the park home run in the nightcap while Jordan Clemens drove in four runs as the Cardinal J.V.’s finished 26-10.
Clinton 3, Bronson 0; Clinton 15, Bronson 3
A rough day for Bronson as they were swept in a doubleheader at Clinton by scores of 3-0 and 15-3. Payton Robinson had two hits in the first game while pitcher Adyson Lasky tossed a complete game. The doubleheader loss left Bronson with a record of 20-13.
Quincy 14, Marshall 1; Quincy 12, Marshall 1
Quincy improved to 22-11 as they swept Marshall by scores of 14-1 and 12-1. Hannah Econonmou and Kaylyn Oliver were the winning pitchers. Katie Newberry three hits and three stolen bases in the first game while Megan Parshall tripled and had two RBI’s. Mickala Signor had three hits in the nightcap. Quincy is now 22-11
—BOYS GOLF—
Coldwater wins District Title
Coldwater traveled to the Orchard Hills Country Club in Niles on Thursday to participate in the MHSAA District hosted by Niles and came away with a 1st place finish in the event. Coldwater had a strong team performance with a score of 318. Mattawan was 23 shots back in second place with a 341.
Coldwater placed three players in the top 5 with Nolan Duda taking 2nd place overall with a score of 76, Nathan Waterbury took 4th place with a 78 and Cam Ruge came in 5th place with a round of 81. Coldwater’s Keagan Dwyer finished in a tie for 7th place with an 83 and Nick Galliers finished in a tie for 9th place overall.
Coldwater will host this year’s MHSAA Regional next Thursday at the Coldwater Golf Course.
Two Branch County golfers qualified for the regionals on Thursday at the Division Four Boys Golf Districts at Milham Park in Kalamazoo. Bronson freshman Brandon Hyska finished second with an 85 as he became the first Viking to advance to regionals in six years.
Nick Collyer of Union City also advanced as an individual with a round of 95. Hayden Kreger fired a 96 for the Chargers. Union City finished eighth in the team standings while Bronson did not have enough golfers for a team score. Kalamazoo Christian won the team title with a score of 333, Concord was second at 348 followed by Kalamazoo Hackett at 351.

Quincy 3, Grass Lake 2
The Quincy Orioles came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Grass Lake 3-2 in a cross over match-up between the ISL’s East and West Divisions. After falling behind by two goals, the second half saw the Orioles Hannah Kaser score two unassisted goals in less than a minute. Cailyn Cook then scored the game winner at 8:57 on an unassisted play. Coach Tim Hart said “Both girls made great plays to score. We had been moving the ball well and finally we broke through. Our defense also played strong tonight. Overall it was a good victory”. Quincy’s Haley Askew had 13 saves on the night after relieving Cailyn Hines who had 3 saves in the start. Quincy is now 8-7-2 on the year. Quincy finished fourth in the West Division with a 4-5-2 record.
