HILLSDALE COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Hillsdale County residents are being advised by both the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police about a phone scam going around the county.
The Sheriff’s Department says there have been reports of persons being told by a caller that they have an arrest warrant.
The caller further states that if a payment is made right now the warrant will be taken care of. They also may mention something about having DNA taken or needing DNA.
The Sheriff’s Department says this is all a scam. The scammers may also send you a bar code to your phone to have the store scan and send the money through the bar code.
The Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office says they would never contact residents and ask for money over the phone or with a bar code. They also do not demand people give their banking information over the phone.
Meanwhile, the Michigan State Police say two people have reported getting a call from someone claiming to be a Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office deputy and demanding a $1,000 payment to clear their arrest warrants.
Troopers say callers have been told to go to Walmart and scan a barcode that will take the money from their account.
