COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council voted 8-1 on Monday night to approve a city request to make a $75,000 offer to buy property at 295 South Clay so that the intersection of South Clay and Division Street can be realigned and that the existing building can be either demolished or renovated.
The city wants to buy just under four-tenths of an acre from Steven Olmstead through Decathlon Investments, LLC.
According to City Manager Keith Baker, Decathlon Investments, LLC purchased the property in 2023 for $95,000 and it is Olmstead’s intent to make a gift to the City of approximately $20,000 by selling it below his purchase price.
The existing building used to be a service station. Most recently it has been used for storage as there is no sanitary sewer available at the property. An environmental study and asbestos testing must be performed to assess possible remediation costs.
Baker says the City’s intent is to remove the building in order to provide a more attractive southern entrance to the City and it would also be a location for a linear park trail to cross South Clay and Division Streets.
The City Council voted 5-1 in favor of a request last month but there were not enough votes for the adoption of a resolution as a super majority of six votes were needed. Three Council members were absent due to Spring Break.
Council Member Emily Rissman voted no last month and again on Monday because she felt the money could be spent on other corridor projects.
