ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – St. Joseph County Commission Chairperson Ken Malone has declared a local state of emergency after significant tornado damage was reported at multiple locations in the county.
According to a statement from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, local resources are being utilized to the fullest possible extent and that response and
recovery elements of the County’s emergency operations plan have been activated.
Undersheriff Jason Bingaman says the tornado damage took place in the central, north central, and northeastern sections of the county.
As late Tuesday night, there have been two reported non-life threatening injuries associated with the tornado activity. Numerous homes and businesses have sustained damage.
Utility providers, public works personnel, law enforcement, fire, and EMS were all working to ensure life safety issues are handled.
Preliminary damage assessments will begin on Wednesday. Local residents affected by the severe weather are encouraged to report their own damage, using

The National Weather Service will be in St. Joseph County in the coming days to determine the specifics of the tornado activity.
Residents who are running a generator during the loss of power are being reminded to run it outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
Generators should never be operated in a garage, basement, or other indoor location.
