KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – Union City’s cross country teams had a big day on Saturday at the Kalamazoo Christian Comet Invite.
There were two new school records set while seven boys ran under 18 minutes and 13 runners recorded personal bests.
The Chargers were second in the boys meet with 77 points behind Kalamazoo Home School Sports with 60 points.
Union City was led by Ben Gautsche who placed 4th and set a new school record with a time of 16:21.52, breaking his old record of 16:27 set earlier this season.
The boys top five scorers all medaled (top 30): Jason Shoop in 10th (16:50.2), Cohen Burdick in 15th (17:11.09), Malachi Payne in 25th (17:39.52), Cullen Decker in 26th (17:43.32). Also setting PRs and finishing just out the medals were Noah June in 31st (17:52.81) and Aidan Taylor in 33rd (17:58.75). Personal bests were also run by freshman Luke McKown and junior Jonas Burdick.
The Union City girls were third with 99 points behind Grand Rapids South Christian (53) and Grand Rapids Covenant Christian (73). The girls were led by senior Skyler Fraley who also set a new school record with a time of 19:19.19, breaking her own record of 19:35 set earlier this season.
The girls had three more medalists with Alli Gautsche placing 6th (20:06.08), Alissa Skirka in 14th (20:49.74), and Parker Williams in 29th (21:41.0). Also scoring for the Chargers was Carly Smith in 65th (23:19).
Aidan Taylor and Olivia Wood earned the Cruisin Comet award for their performances.
The Chargers will race in the final conference jamboree on Tuesday at Bronson and run in the Regionals on Saturday in Portage.
