ALMA, MI (WTVB) – A former Branch County man charged with a vicious beating in an elder abuse case which left his mother seriously injured is scheduled for a hearing today in a mid-Michigan courtroom.
53-year old Richard Coin of Alma is set to appear in Gratiot County District Court for a preliminary exam. Coin had lived in Quincy in the 1990’s when he was employed by Star of the West Milling and was active in community affairs.
Coin was arrested March 14, 2017 , the date of the alleged offense, and arraigned the next day on one count of first degree vulnerable adult abuse, a 15 year felony. The Morning Sun, a Mt. Pleasant newspaper, reported that first responders were dispatched to a home Coin shared with his mother in Alma after another person living there called 911.
According to the newspaper, the 76-year old woman was unresponsive and had visible injuries when medics arrived. The Morning Sun reported the victim was airlifted to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for treatment of multiple wounds, including a significant internal injury.
Chief Assistant Gratiot County Prosecutor Jennifer Shephard told us additional charges might be filed against Coin. She also said Coin served prison time for a 2003 conviction out of Mackinac County for Home Invasion 1st Degree.
Coin, who was his mother’s caregiver, is being held on a ten percent allowed, $250,000 bond.
