It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Dogan, Jr.,92, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and coach. John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of love, mentorship, and cherished memories from his 92 beautiful years.
Born in Romulus, Michigan, and raised in Homer, John proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956, with assignments in Cuba and French Morocco. Side trips to Casablanca and Marrakesh provided him with great stories to share throughout his life.
After returning home, he met the love of his life, Susan (Wagoner). They married in 1958 and recently celebrated 67 years of marriage, a true testament to their enduring bond and devotion.
After graduating from Central Michigan University, John pursued his passion for teaching and coaching. He began his 30-plus-year career in Belding before moving on to Jackson Lumen Christi, St. Charles, and later Quincy High School.
John and Sue settled in Coldwater in 1964, where they lived until 2024. A gifted mentor, John shaped the lives of countless students and athletes through his leadership, patience, and encouragement.
Alongside his career in education, John was also a talented carpenter and owner of Dogan Construction, building numerous custom homes and swimming pools in the Coldwater area — including two for his own family. His craftsmanship was admired by many and left a lasting mark on the community.
John’s greatest joys were spending time with family, playing golf, and cheering on his beloved University of Michigan Wolverines. As an early member of the Coldwater Country Club, he spent countless hours on the course, especially enjoying the Friday Night League with Sue and their close friends.
In the fall, John and Sue’s tailgate gatherings at Michigan football games became legendary, even once featured on ESPN’s Game Day. Always the first to arrive and the last to leave, John formed lifelong bonds with his tailgate family.
John is survived by his loving wife, Sue; children Lee McNary (John), Jay Dogan, and Mary Winslow (Marc); grandchildren Allison McNary (Colin), Katie McNary Knight (Nick), and Lucas Winslow; and his treasured great-granddaughter, Madelyn Knight. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Blanche (Cochran) Dogan, and siblings Ruth, Donald, and Paul.
A Celebration of Life will be held October 11, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Golf Club of Coldwater, where John will be honored for his military service and remembered for his love of family, friendships, and zest for life.
Friends are encouraged to attend in their favorite college colors — though maize and blue are especially welcomed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
John will be deeply missed, but his warmth, humor, and spirit will live on in the lives of all who knew him.
Suit Up and Go Blue, Dad.
