LANSING, MI (WTVB) – A report by the Michigan Office of the Auditor General has identified thousands of potential errors in Michigan’s Sex Offender Registry, maintained by the Michigan State Police (MSP) .
As of July 2024, an audit sample found that 25% of registered sex offenders had unverified addresses, among other issues like missing conviction information that could lead to premature removal from the registry.
The audit recommended cross-referencing registry data with driver’s license information or requiring periodic address verifications. Michigan State Police say they have updated incorrect information since the audit.
The audit also revealed ineffective security measures and a lack of oversight, noting that 80% of state users with registry access could not access their authorization forms.
Insufficient training and guidance for registering authorities were linked to the inaccuracies.
MSP has acknowledged discontinuing training previously due to factors including COVID-19 and limited resources, but has pledged to reinstate it.
