LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget is forecasting a competitive summer labor market for teens, projecting an 18.0 percent unemployment rate as 45,400 young workers seek employment.
While general state unemployment remains steady, the teen rate is trending upward from previous years, with highest demand expected in retail and food service industries. Occupations such as Retail salesperson, Fast food and counter worker, Stocker and order filler are some of the most in-demand entry-level occupations every month.
These jobs typically provide flexible hours and require minimal prior experience, making them well‑suited for teens entering the workforce.
The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity has launched a Youth Workers’ Rights Initiative to assist in this market, offering resources on safety and labor rights at https://www.michigan.gov/leo/initiatives/youth-employment. Young job seekers are advised to utilize these resources and connect with Michigan Works offices for support with job searches and resume development.
