KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal softball team improved to 28-1 overall following a doubleheader sweep Tuesday at Kalamazoo Central, 5-0 and 14-3 in five innings.
In the first game, Laynie VanAken tossed a two-hit shutout with no walks and 17 strikeouts. Addy Bucklin hit a two-run double, Mya Porter went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Audrina Bucklin added a two-RBI single, and Mackenzie Searing doubled.
The Cardinals strung together a twelve-hit attack in the second game. Laynie VanAken doubled, hit a two-run homer, and drove in four runs total, while older sister Rylie had two RBI doubles and Porter went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Starting pitcher Audrina Bucklin drove in two runs; on the circle, she allowed four hits and struck out four batters.
Coldwater earned the outright Interstate 8 softball championship after Harper Creek and Parma Western split a league doubleheader. The Beavers took the opener 10-0 in six innings, but the Panthers came back to win the nightcap 11-8, leaving Harper Creek’s final league record at 10-2. The Cardinals finished I-8 play last week at 11-1.
Coldwater will play at Otsego on Thursday.
QUINCY, MI – Quincy took two from Concord on Senior Night, 12-5 and 16-0 in three innings.
In the first game, Hannah Brown was 4-for-5, Mackenzie Sattison went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple, and Miley Poindexter was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Josi Parker and Gabbi Norris drove in two runs apiece while going 2-for-4, and Shaylee Cope added a double. Starting pitcher Taylor Lewis struck out six.
Parker threw a one-hit shutout in the second game with seven strikeouts. She helped her own cause at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs. Poindexter was 2-for-3 with a double and drove in five runs, and Lewis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Norris had an RBI triple, and Gracin Hemker added an RBI double.
The Orioles improved to 13-17 overall and closed out Big 8 play at 4-8. They will travel to Hudson on Friday.
