COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – ITC Michigan has announced that it will conduct low-flying helicopter inspections of high-voltage transmission lines across much of the Lower Peninsula from May 27 through June 30, 2026.
For residents in Branch County and surrounding areas, including Hillsdale, St. Joseph, Calhoun, and Kalamazoo, the aerial patrols are specifically scheduled for June 12–17, weather permitting.
These routine inspections are designed to assess the condition of overhead structures, power lines, and equipment to ensure long-term grid reliability.
During these patrols, crews will fly at low altitudes to identify signs of equipment wear, lightning damage, or encroaching vegetation that could threaten service.
ITC officials emphasizes the flights are a standard requirement by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and are no cause for alarm.
The inspections cover approximately 9,100 circuit miles of transmission line operated by ITC Transmission and the Michigan Electric Transmission Company (METC), supporting the state’s ongoing preventive maintenance efforts.
