COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A bright fireball meteor lit up the night sky Monday across Branch County with sightings reported as far north as the UP and as far south as central Indiana, generating hundreds of reports from sky watchers across multiple states and Canada.
The meteor was spotted at about 10:42 p.m. and was seen streaking across Branch County and Southern Michigan with a brilliant flash before continuing a southern trajectory.
According to early reports, the object’s path may have possibly taken it directly over Coldwater.
Witnesses from at least eight states and Ontario reported seeing the fireball. Observers said the meteor visibly fragmented as it crossed the sky, with the streak reportedly lasting as long as seven seconds.
Despite its brightness, there have been no reports of a sonic boom or other sounds associated with the event.
Officials continue gathering reports and analyzing data to better determine the meteor’s exact path and characteristics.
It was the second time this year Branch County residents reported a meteor sighting. On March 23 a meteor entered Earth’s atmosphere in southern Wisconsin and could be seen passing over half a dozen states, including all of southern Michigan.
