COLDWATER, MI A thick blanket of Canadian wildfire smoke has triggered a statewide air quality alert across Michigan today, reducing visibility and turning skies a hazy gray.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) issued the urgent advisory after monitoring stations reported pollutants reaching unhealthy levels for sensitive groups.
Officials are strongly advising elderly residents, young children, and individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma to limit their time outdoors. Even healthy adults are being urged to scale back strenuous physical activities and exercise routines until the heavy smoke dissipates.
The dramatic impact of the shifting smoke plume was most visible at the Straits of Mackinac, where the iconic Mackinac Bridge was completely engulfed by the dense, low-hanging haze.
Drivers crossing the five-mile span reported eerie, near-zero visibility conditions, with the bridge’s massive towers entirely swallowed by the gray shroud.
Transportation officials have advised motorists to slow down, use extra caution, and keep their headlights on while traveling through the northern shipping channel.
State environmental meteorologists continue to track the particulate matter and expect the poor air conditions to persist through the evening.
