COLDWATER,MI (WTVB) – Although AQ levels won’t be what we suffered through late last week, The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has extended a statewide Air Quality Alert through today, as drifting plume of Canadian wildfire smoke continue to cover southern Michigan.
State officials initially tracked a massive wave of fine particulate matter that triggered historically hazardous conditions across the state last week. Although a recent cold front did provided temporary relief over the weekend, shifting wind patterns behind the system have pulled another dense layer of near-surface wildfire smoke directly down into southern Michigan.
Meteorologists expect air pollution levels to reach the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” (USG) range statewide today, while sections of the Upper Peninsula could experience heavier “Unhealthy” red categories.
Health officials and the Environmental Protection Agency are advising residents—particularly children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma or heart disease, to continue limiting prolonged outdoor exertion and close windows to minimize fine particulate inhalation.
