KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – A Kalamazoo man accused of shooting a sheriff’s deputy has been formally charged and is being held on a $1 million bond following his arraignment Monday morning.
The suspect, identified as Jaylen Lipsey, faces multiple severe felony counts authorized by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office, including assault with intent to murder, carjacking, disarming a police officer, and fleeing and eluding law enforcement.
The charges stem from a violent encounter last Friday, when a six-year veteran deputy responded to a vehicle larceny report on East AB Avenue in Richland Township. During a struggle with the suspect, Lipsey allegedly gained control of the deputy’s firearm and shot him in the leg before stealing the deputy’s patrol cruiser to flee the scene.
The theft triggered a high-speed police pursuit through downtown Kalamazoo and various parts of the county as multiple law enforcement agencies tracked the stolen cruiser.
The multi-jurisdictional chase came to an end when Lipsey crashed into several vehicles—including multiple police units and a civilian van—directly in front of Julianna’s Restaurant on Lake Street.
Lipsey made a brief attempt to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by responding officers. While the suspect escaped the crash without serious injuries, the wounded Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputy remains hospitalized with serious injuries, though officials previously listed him in stable condition as he continues his recovery.
