COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Finance Director and Deputy County Administrator Jessica Miller told the Board of Commissioners during their work session Thursday that the county’s 2026 budget after the second quarter is now in the black.
She said after a projected first quarter deficit of over $302,000, a series of second quarter amendments has left the county with a projected surplus of about $305,000.
Miller noted, “the improvement is largely attributable to higher-than-budgeted property tax revenue and departmental budget adjustments that more accurately reflect current operations.”
According to Miller, revenues increased during the second quarter by over $529,000 primarily due to over $671,000 in additional current property tax revenue based on the final L-4029 tax levy.
She added another $191,400 was saved from the elimination of District and Circuit Court reimbursements for two Sheriff’s Department bailiff positions. That led to an appropriation decrease of over $78,000 from a first quarter budget amendment.
In addition, a bailiff position and related costs were transferred to the jail budget.
