COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Now that the Department of Energy has approved an application from the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities, the utility’s Board of Directors this week authorized Director Paul Jakubczak to move forward with a Grid Resilience Program Grant.
The utility has been trying to secure a infrastructure improvement grant from the state for almost three years. The grants were made available to electric utilities across Michigan.
The CBPU first submitted an application in November 2023 requesting the replacement of overhead lines, aging underground cable, tree trimming and overhead to underground cable upgrades.
But the application was denied the following April. The CBPU tried again in the fall of 2024 as they sought grant funds for two projects.
The first was to replace open wire secondary cable in order to improve system reliability and the second was for the replacement of underground primary cable that has reached the end of its life for a total project cost of over $452,000.
The grant is a 50 percent match, so the CBPU would be responsible for about $226,000. The work will need to be completed by December 2027 unless an extension is approved.
