LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The House Tuesday overwhelmingly passed legislation introduced by State Rep. Jennifer Wortz that honors the memory of Branch County Road Commission employee Casey Rice.
Wortz said in a statement “Casey dedicated himself to serving the people of Branch County, and this designation honors the impact he made through that work,” She added “I’m grateful my colleagues in the House recognized the importance of moving this legislation forward so we can create a lasting tribute to Casey and the legacy he leaves behind.”
House Bill 6309 designates a portion of M-86 in Branch County from US-12 to Arbogast Road, an area Rice routinely serviced, as the “Casey Rice Memorial Highway.”
Rice was tragically killed by a semi-truck in June while operating a tractor-mower near Interstate 69. The semi-truck driver involved is facing numerous charges, including open murder and operating while intoxicated causing death.
Wortz said “This stretch of M-86 was part of Casey’s daily work, making it especially meaningful that his name could remain connected to the community and roads he helped maintain,”
The bill now heads to the Senate Transportation Committee for a hearing, if passed it would then go to the full senate for a vote.
