LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Disgraced former sports doctor Larry Nassar has been removed from Michigan’s sex offender registry following a landmark ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court.
The court unanimously decided that applying the state’s 2021 Sex Offender Registration Act retroactively to individuals whose crimes were committed before July 2011 is unconstitutional. Legal experts explained that the state cannot impose new administrative punishments for offenses that occurred before those specific laws were enacted.
Because Nassar’s systemic sexual abuse of hundreds of female athletes took place prior to the 2011 threshold, he is among more than 20,000 convicted individuals systematically removed from the registry to comply with the court’s mandate.
The decision has drawn fierce criticism from local prosecutors, including the Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which stated that eliminating these public requirements deeply compromises community awareness and victim protections.
Despite his removal from the public registry database, officials emphasized that the ruling has absolutely no impact on underlying criminal convictions or prison sentences. Nassar, who is currently serving a 40-to-175-year prison sentence, remains fully incarcerated and will not be released.
