GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WTVB) Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Republican U.S. Representative John James clashed fiercely on Tuesday night during their first televised gubernatorial debate, trading personal barbs and sharp ideological attacks just four weeks before Election Day.
Hosted by WOOD-TV, the hour-long event to succeed term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer repeatedly boiled over as the candidates drew stark contrasts over the state’s direction. Benson frequently tied James to President Donald Trump, labeling national tariffs the “John James tax”, while James retaliated by blaming Benson and the current Democratic administration for Michigan’s low economic rankings and failing state leadership.
The most explosive segment of the evening centered on data center development, prompting a heated exchange over personal finances and ethics. James went on the offensive in the spin room and on stage, accusing Benson of personally profiting from a controversial data center project tied to her husband’s employment.
Benson aggressively pushed back, stating her family had not profited and pointing out that James himself had previously voted to cut developer taxes.
The two candidates traded blows on stage right to the very end
With an Emerson College poll showing Benson holding a narrow lead, the highly personal dispute underscored the rising stakes of the race before the candidates meet for their second debate in Detroit.
