COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – On Purple Night, Coldwater’s annual cancer awareness event, the Cardinal football team turned a 14-14 first quarter stalemate into a comfortable 42-22 victory at Cardinal Field.
The first twelve minutes saw a 59-yard TD run from Evan Lewis, a 2-yard score from Pennfield’s Isaiah Eakins-Gray, a 1-yard QB keeper from Royale Fleming, and a 40-yard TD pass from Alex Miller to Rhanin Korloch. After the Panthers tied the score at 14-all, they would not score again until very late in the contest.
In the second quarter, Fleming threw a 9-yard TD pass to Lewis, and Trevor Mitchell scored on a 45-yard scamper, to open up a 28-14 Coldwater lead at the half. The Cardinals would add a 9-yard touchdown pass from Lewis to Dayton Ennis in the third quarter and a 4-yard Travon Mitchell TD run in the fourth. The final score of the game came on a 19-yard run from Pennfield’s Tae’Veon Stinson. All told, Coldwater outgained the Panthers 324-223 on the ground and 396-312 overall.
Lewis finished with 12 carries for 126 yards, two receptions for 42 yards, and two kick returns for 28 yards, a total of 196 all-purpose yards. Trevor Mitchell had 10 carries for 123 yards and two receptions for 21 yards, giving him 144 all-purpose yards. Fleming was 4-of-6 passing for 63 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions while also rushing for 53 yards on 11 carries. Ares Wagoner tallied 15 tackles to lead the defense, and Colton Duke added 9.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Interstate 8. They will visit league-leading Marshall next Friday.
